UKULELE GRADE 5

What’s Involved?
Up To 75 Marks For
 You are required to play THREE pieces (each one attracts 25 marks)You can elect to play:

  • all three pieces from those listed within our syllabus
  • OR you can opt for three pieces of your own choice (*please find guidance in ‘Own Choice’ Zone)
  • OR you can mix repertoire featuring in our syllabus list combined with pieces of your own choice (*again please visit ‘Own Choice’ Zone for guidance)
Up To10 Marks For
 RHYTHM OR TECHNIQUE RHYTHM
From HAL LEONARD UKULELE METHOD BOOK 2 (ISBN 978-1-4234-1618-0)

Play the three listed rhythm studies:

  1. RAGTIME STRUM – page 29, track 20
  2. UKE-IN THE RAGS – page 31, exercise 56
  3. CALYPSO STRUM (Sleep John B) – page 35, track 63

OR instead

TECHNIQUE
From Play Ukulele Today! Level 2 (ISBN 978-1-57424-278-2)

Play the following two following studies:

  1. Parallel consecutive 3rds from C and E, F and A, one octave ascending – page 40, 41
  2. Parallel consecutive sixths from E and C, C♯ and A, one octave ascending – page 41
Up To10 Marks For
 MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE
The candidate will be asked by the examiner to identify and explain five of the following area’s of underpinning musical knowledge:  Chord inversions, syncopation, Primary and Secondary chords (major key only), intervals within one octave of the major scale, the construction of the augmented chord (root position), musical form
Up To 5 Marks For
 TUNING
Tune a Ukulele by ear on which all four strings will need adjustment, a reference G will be given.  Candidates will be permitted a maximum of 2 minutes to complete this task
Playing Skills Guide For This Grade
 TECHNIQUE
Hammer–ons / pull-offs to both open and fretted notes / finger picking

IN ADDITION
Use of open G string / use of intervals and chords in melody line / triplets / slides / perfect cadences using four note chords
