Popular Songwriting – Debut

Popular Songwriting – Debut Level requires the candidate to submit two original songs. These can be performed live or played to the examiner in recorded form.

PART ONE (80 MARKS)
|
- Each song should be approximately 2.30 minutes in duration and cover a vocal range of at least seven notes. It is not necessary for the candidate to be the vocalist and any preferred backing will be accepted. One song maybe performed A Cappella.
- The candidate will be expected to use contrasting styles, keys and tempo for each song.
- Both the key and vocal range of each song should be outlined to the examiner before assessment commences.
- Candidates are required to provide and use both their own instrument and playback equipment for the exam. However a piano will be available if required.

PART TWO (20 MARKS)

To conclude candidates will be required to discuss with the examiner how each song was composed providing rough, initial workings. |
MARKING SCHEME |
- The use of contrasting styles, keys and tempo
- Establishment of a hook (melodic, instrumental or lyrics)
- Effectiveness of lyrics with required vocal range
- Evidence of form
- Discussion of composition with the examiner
