Popular Songwriting – Artist

Popular Songwriting – Artist Level requires the candidate to submit three original songs. These can be performed live or played to the examiner in recorded form.

PART ONE (75 MARKS)
|
- Each song should be approximately 3.15 minutes in duration, with a minimum vocal range of at least eleven notes. It is not necessary for the candidate to be the vocalist and you are permitted to use as many different vocalists as necessary.
- Vocal harmony, variety and complexity of instrumental backings, use of instrumental intros/outros and instrumental breaks should feature at this level
- The form, vocal range and key(s) used for each song will be requested by the examiner as well as the vocal type i.e. Bass, Tenor, Alto or Soprano
- Candidates are required to use their own instrument and playback equipment for the exam. However a piano will be available if required.

PART TWO (25 MARKS)
|
- A full transcription of one of the songs is required. Candidates may produce this by any method, but (as a minimum) should ensure that the melody, lyrics, chord symbols, marks of expression and performance directions are included.
- Finally candidates will be required to discuss with the examiner their personal method of song writing providing rough, initial workings to illustrate.
