What’s Involved?

Up To 75 Marks For
You are required to play THREE pieces (each one attracts 25 marks)You can elect to play:

  • all three pieces from those listed within our syllabus
  • OR you can opt for three pieces of your own choice (*please find guidance in ‘Own Choice’ Zone)
  • OR you can mix repertoire featuring in our syllabus list combined with pieces of your own choice (*again please visit ‘Own Choice’ Zone for guidance)
Up To 15 Marks For
KEYBOARD HARMONY

KEYBOARD HARMONY

  1. Using two keys from your chosen pieces play the following chords: I, IV and V7, and also II7, III and VI – using right hand only in root, first and second inversions
  2. Play four of the following chords as requested by the examiner: E♭, A♭ and D♭ major and C, F and B♭ minor – these should be played in root, first and second inversion, three notes in the right, root in the left

PLAYING A PIECE FROM MEMORY
You can elect play one of your chosen listed or ‘own choice’ piece from memory

Up To 10 Marks For
MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE
The candidate will be asked five of the following questions:

  1. Explain 6/8 time and name the appropriate style/drum beat that is used with this time signature.
  2. What is Transposition?   Give two instances when this is required.
  3. Name two types of Suspensions and explain the difference between each.
  4. Explain the construction of both Major and Minor difference between each.
  5. Recognise, name and explain any term, sign or symbol that occur in any of the performed pieces.
  6. Explain Triplets and Syncopation.
Use Of Digital Piano
You need to use five of the listed functions/features of your digital piano

  1. Dual voice
  2. Split keyboard
  3. A minimum of four piano variations
  4. Use of the sustain pedal
  5. Use of style or beat (no auto accompaniment)
  6. Use of synchro start if using a beat
  7. Use of any other pedal
Playing Skills Guide For This Grade
RIGHT HAND
More use of semiquavers, dotted rhythm and triplets / four and five note chords

LEFT HAND
Melody partly played by the left hand / chords and arpeggios

IN ADDITION
Introduction of chord symbols / changes of key within a piece / tonic pedal / use of two treble clefs /  triplets in crotchets/ extensive use of repeats / two part playing / contrasts of tempo / fermata
